Abdominal ultrasounds are used to check the major organs in the abdominal cavity.
The Doctor usually performs the abdominal ultrasound by applying a small amount of gel to your abdomen. The gel works with the ultrasound device, called a transducer, to provide better images The procedure usually lasts less than 20 minutes.
You typically need to avoid food (fast) for six to 8 hours before an abdominal ultrasound. Food in your stomach can make it difficult for the Doctor to get a clear picture of the structures in your abdomen.
You have to drink water (approx.1 litre) during your fast one hour before your test. You should continue to take any medications. Hold the urine in your bladder until your test is done.
